Discover the art of glassware

·25 August 2025

In the world of luxury and enjoyment, there are details that, far from being accessories, are the core of the experience. Glassware is a paradigmatic example. Often relegated to the background, the right glass is, in fact, a precision tool designed to exalt the virtues of a good wine, champagne, or spirit. Understanding it is not snobbery, but knowledge; another step on the path of the true connoisseur.

Why Does Shape Matter?

A glass is not just any container. Every curve, every thickness, every opening, serves a specific function.

  • The Bowl: This is the space where the wine breathes. Its shape determines the surface area in contact with the air, which is key for oxygenation. A powerful red wine, like a Cabernet Sauvignon, demands a wide bowl (Bordeaux-style glass) to release its complex aromas. A more delicate Pinot Noir expresses itself better in an even wider bowl, but with a narrower rim (Burgundy-style glass) to concentrate its subtle perfumes.
  • The Rim (the opening): This is the orchestra conductor. A narrow rim concentrates the aromas and directs the liquid to the tip of the tongue, accentuating sweetness. A wider rim disperses it, softening acidity. Brands like Riedel have taken this science to its highest expression, designing specific glasses for each grape variety.
  • The Stem and Base: Far from being merely aesthetic, the stem prevents the heat from your hand from altering the wine's temperature. A long, thin stem is a sign of elegance and functionality.

Bubbles and Their Temple: Myths and Realities of Champagne

The traditional flute glass, long and narrow, is excellent for preserving the "perlage" (the stream of bubbles), but it drastically limits the aromatic expression of champagne. Experts and major houses increasingly advocate for a tulip glass, with a wider base and a slightly narrower rim, which offers a perfect balance between the visual spectacle of the bubbles and the olfactory richness. And the Pompadour (coupe) glass? Reserved for cocktails or for a Great Gatsby-style toast, although it is not ideal for a technical tasting.

The Universe of Cocktails and Spirits

Every cocktail has its glass, and this choice is not arbitrary.

  • "Old Fashioned" Glass: With a wide, heavy base, it is perfect for spirits served neat, with ice (on the rocks), or for cocktails like the one it is named after. It allows for comfortable stirring of ingredients and enjoyment of the liquid's color and texture. A good cut crystal adds an exceptional play of light.
  • "Highball" Glass: Tall and narrow, designed for long drinks with mixers, like a Gin & Tonic or a Mojito. It maintains carbonation and freshness for longer.

The Decanter: The Sculpture That Lets Wine Breathe

A decanter is not just a spectacularly beautiful object on the table. It is an essential tool for two functions: oxygenating young, powerful wines to soften their tannins, and separating sediment in aged wines. The designs range from the most classic to the most avant-garde and sculptural, turning the act of decanting into a true ritual.

Investing in good glassware is investing in pleasure. It is a declaration of respect for the producer, for the drink, and, above all, for oneself and one's guests. Every time we raise a fine crystal glass, we are not only holding an object of exquisite design, but we are about to participate in a richer and more profound sensory experience. At Casa Canut, we select glassware that not only contains drinks, but elevates moments.
